Emission Controls

I have an 84 Trans Am 305 and I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the emissions system w/out changing the carb?

I live in an area of PA where we don't need emission testing and I've been having all kinds of trouble w/ the emission stuff (missing at idel, missing w/ full throttle, and stalling) and dont feel like buying 100 bucks worth of replacement parts.

I have already changed the distributer to vacum but I need to find a way to hook it up to the carb, when I hook it up like canada's emissions standers, it advances too quickly and set off the timing, pehaps I need some kind of valve to retard the distributer?

Well thanks for your help

Welcome aboard.

Is this a Canadian car? If not, you've started off on the wrong foot completely. I'll assume it is not, since you said PA.

Your problems are most likely completely unrelated to "emissions" equipment. Ignition is typically the right place to look, then vacuum leaks. There is nothing basically wrong with the computer-controlled system, other than the coil and ignition module (in the distributor), which will cost you about $130 to fix. That's after you get the "regular" stuff up to snuff: cap, rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires. And, of course, no vacuum leaks.

The vacuum/mechanical distributor you put in is completely incompatible with your carb. Take it off/back (hope you get your money back, if it was a new one), and spend your money in the right place.

If you can't get your money back on the distributor (or you think you want to stay with it), you're looking at a non-computer controlled carb, either rebuilt or new (Edelbrock Performer q-jet the only truly "new" q-jet available right now). Most used ones need some kind of help like rebuild, and some of their problems aren't fixed with a standard rebuid kit - and can get very expensive to fix, beyond the price of a rebuilt computer-controlled carb.

Any way you look at it, unless you have good, useable, used parts available (non-computer controlled carb and distributor), you're looking at less money to fix what the car came with than you are at getting around it.

Alright I see, so the emission system shouldn't realy cause any main problems? (unless theres leaks)

Let me tell you a little more about what I have done to my car to get rid of the "missing" in the idel:

Changed Carb (same carb/vin numbers and rebuilt) and tried a rebuilt carb from a 85 cutlass. I am using an orginal (rebuilt) carb.

Changed distributer to vacum(LoL btw it was free) thinking I could set it up through canadas system, since canadas layout shows a vacum distributer, but guess not.

Full tune up (plugs, filters, wires, cap, roter ect...)

Changed fuel pump

Replaced All vacum lines

Im going to check compression as soon as the weather gets dry here LoL.

What else do you think could be the problem (if the cam is good)?

and I got 2 more questions:

1:Should a computer controled distributer have the weights and springs on it? because my orignal didn't?

2: anyone know the what the compression on a 84 305 should be?

Well thanks agian for all your help!

The CC distributor doesn't have weights or springs in it. It advances based on the ECM.

Do you still have the miss, or has it gone away with what you've done?

Not sure if this posted twice:

I still have a miss(after all that ^ the engine still misses enough to wobble the engine and shake the hood)

This just seems very strange because I changed pretty much everything that is controlled by the ecm, and closed off all vacum leak, and changed most of the common fuel porblems.

Well Thanks agian.

Time for a compression check (after you make double sure you don't have any plug wires crossed).
