i know it probably should but, will changing the starter, to one out of a camaro, make it sound normal, or is it the tranny/eninge that makes the sound.

very loud, bad noise. louder that the car in idle.

Does it need a shim??

How is the flywheel??

How old is the starter??

Do you have the correct bolts?? (actual starter bolts)

The number of teeth on the flywheel and the starter nose is different on older vehicles than on your 3rd gen. So make sure your not mixing the 2 up..that would make one hell of a noise..
