Are you saying that the car wasn't equipped with an EGR valve, or that yours has been removed?

egr

what i meant was that in the books and by reading in the forums everyone says to check vacuum at the solenoid, well im here to tell ya i dont have one where the solenoid should be according to the books is what appears to be some sort of a coil with about 3 to 4 electrical connections to it and a plug wire to distributor.so with that being said i was looking for a vacuum diagram for my particular set up since the motor has been rebuilt and all the smog pollution has been removed i want to make shure all the vacuum lines are in the proper places so i can get the idle problem fixed.I have a 1987 transam ordered with the 5.7 ltr 350L98. after the rebuild i was getting a light to check the egr and low and behold they didnt even have a vacuum line to it, nor did they have one connected to the very bottom front of the plenum.this might have been where some of the smog crap plugged in for vacuum.for some reason though the car was running fine and idled good at a sit still.now since replacing the o rings in the fuel rails and injectors, and replacing the egr and the maf the car idles like **** even though ive been through all the adjustments so much i can do it in my sleep now.today i replaced all my vacuum lines hoping that would help, still no luck. i sprayed carburetorcleaner around all connections and when i got to the egr valve the engine reved up a little so i checked it out and the mechanic put the wrong egr in, mine had the pig tail connector that screwed into the egr so what he did was break off that part and wrapped it in sealing tape and pushed it into a tiny hole that was on the new egr where mine would have gone on my old one. this is where i sprayed and the engine would go up in rpms.could this be the answer i was looking for? something else intresting i read today for everyone with the same old idle problems it appears that the purge valve on the cannister can cause all the same symptoms if its bad. could this be the answer?

here's vacuum and wiring diagrams. but if you sprayed around the egr and the rpms raised, then you need to fix that.

where the solenoid should be according to the books is what appears to be some sort of a coil with about 3 to 4 electrical connections to it and a plug wire to distributor
that is your coil. under that should be where the egr solenoid is supposed to be. but seeing as the emissions stuff has bee nremoved, then it's probably not there.
