Strange tapping sound under the rear of car.

I have this annoying tapping sound that's coming from the rear of the car. sounds like it is coming from the muffler, but the muffler isn't hitting anything metal. Tapping sound happens when the car is idling or driving. Tapping speeds up with more RPMs. The sound is driving me crazy, it's been doing this since april/may of 2000.
thanks.

did you check the spare tire. and really there is no way to know if your muffler is hitting any metal, until you put in the air and really shake it around or start it and let it idle. but its gotta be where you can really see everything.

Exactly how does it sound?? Does it do it more when the exhaust flow is higher??

I know for a fact it's not the spare tire. It's in the garage on the floor.
Yes, the tapping gets faster when the exhaust flow is higher. I am going to have my clutch installed thursday, so I'd like to know what to look for so when it's on the lift I can check everything. Now that I think about it, the tapping started to happen after I got my flowmaster put on. It's not the braces for the muffler. They have rubber grommets on them. Maybe it's closer to the cat, but vibrates to the muffler and resonates there.

OK, u can check this yourself if u want. Lift the rear of your car up. Look for the pipe that goes from the catalytic converter to the muffler. Look for your right rear brake line and follow it to the pipe to the converter and before it is your brake line mount. It will probably be covered by your pipe. If it is too close it will rub up against it constantly, especially when it resonates more. See if thats it. To fix it, take this link: https://www.thirdgen.org/messageforu...ML/000078.html and read RSS fix. BTW, keep us posted.

Before u do what I just suggested, start the car and go to the rear and push the tailpipe, and see if the noise is still there, because it could also be the tailpipe mount. I just did this and fixed it by using a wire to make everything sturdy.

Well, I am going to the shop in a few hours to have my clutch put it in. I can't wait to see how the CenterForce Dual Friction feels.
I'll check all of those things mentioned and see what I can find out and fix.
Thanks again.

I had a real annoying rattle a few months back and kept looking under the car and could not find jackshiit! I finally found it the other day. One of the bolts had come loose at the back of the Torquearm mount. The Torquearm was actually ripping and the sound I was hearing was the metal rubbing due to the cyclic stress caused by the torque of the motor and the looseness of the bolt. I hope this helps.
