Are these heads worth
$100?
a guy i know has a set of aluminum L98 heads from his old vette he'll sell me for $100. he'll get the casting numbers for me later.
what do you think?
what should i do to them to make the most gains?
they'll be going on an otherwise stock 85 t/a 305. only other mod in the future is my cut-out and a new intake, maybe the lt1

yeah they will bolt right on but due to the larger chambers would drop your compression signifigantly.. probably wouldnt be the best for a proformance mod.. maybe if ya gottem milled.. i would think the valves would be a bit large for a stock 305 however
I thought the L98 alluminum heads where 58cc chambers. I wouldn't think you would loose a whole lot of compression.
Don't they come with screw in studs. If so that will save you some money in the long run. For a 100 bucks you will be getting a good weight saving, heads that don't need to have the valve seats enlarged, and possible screw in studs. spend a little on getting the bowls ported and intake matched to the manifold or do it yourself and you should be happy.

i was under the impression that they were 64 cc chambers.. without knowing the casting number i dunno how to check to actually tell ya.. i'd still havta say the valves would be kinda large for a unmodded 305 though.... for 100 bucks though i would defently pick em up.. even if ya dont use em you could always resell em for more.. if ya got the kinda money to do a lt1 induction system swap and everything i would consider getting a 350 short block do some work to those l98 heads.. with the right work that would make for a pretty bad *** engine

No offense, 89, but you need some learnin'.
Aluminum L98 heads are 58cc, 1.94/1.50" valves. They are not too large for a 305.
However, consider this - Iron L98's are 64cc, aluminum 58cc (with same pistons). Reason? The additional combustion heat loss through the aluminum vs. iron reduces power output, which is countered by smaller chamber, therefore higher static compression.
So, if these heads are put on a 305, it would still be best to shave them 6cc's (assuming they would never find their way back to a 350).
Oh, the aluminum heads don't have the exhaust cross-over passages. So, EGR won't work (as bolted on, anyway).

Check all threaded holes in the heads. Make sure they are still threaded. I know a guy with those heads who ended up heli-coiling all of the holes in his because he got tired of doing it one at a time.
