I know this is an amatuer question, but isn't there something I have to disconnect other to check the timing?

there should always be instructions on a label under the hood unless the car is very old or it has been removed. you need to disconnect the EST bypass connector. This is a single wire connector that looks just like an o2 sensor connector. It is a tan wire with black tracer and is located in the harness where it goes over the evaporator case near the back of the RH valve cover. have the car pre-warmed, shut the car off and disconnect this wire. then start the car and set the timing, shut it back off and reconnect the bypass connector and you're good to go. This will store a code 42 in the ECM so if you check codes in the future, be ready for it. Kyle

Matt,

Your connector should be somewhere in this area:
