Non-thirdgen, but GM
Non-thirdgen, but GM
I have a 92' bonneville with the 3800 motor that seems to be missing on a cylinder or 2. I put new plug wires and plugs in it, and it runs better but still misses. The codes are--31, 41, 44, and 58 that are stored in memory. Any ideas on what it could be? im thinking the coil pack but id likc to get some more opinions before i go workin on it.

I've worked on a lot of those 3800 cars with that wonderful coil pack, the easiest way to check for cylender miss is to have the car running and use pliers to pull one plug wire at a time, insulated of coarse,(we use regular pliers with old plug wire boots on the handles and they work pretty good.
That way you can trace the miss back from the plugs to the source.
Hope this helps, don't get shocked!
But if you insulate your pliers you shouldn't.

Well turns out the coil pack WAS bad(i guess) cuz i took the one off a 92' regal(looked different, hooked up same tho) and it runs as good as i can expect a car with 200k miles to run
It is still setting a code 41 after clearing all codes and running it though. My book on Regals says thats a cam position sensor on this motor..i didnt think motors with timing chains had CPS's
Whats this code mean?

I've seen that crank pos. sensor get a hairline crack in it... car would run fine when cold, as it got hotter, the crack would widen, and the sensor would act haywire. From memory tho I think the code was a 42. Granted this was on an '88 2.5 FWD DIS car, but maybe it'll help.
