300+ hp 305???????
300+ hp 305???????
Hey i was wondering what it would take to get my good ol L69 up to or maybe a little past 300 hp. What heads, cam, intake, carb, etc. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks. I would ask this on the monte carlo SS boards but most of those guys have attitude problems and think they have the greatest cars in the world.
Power lies in the heads and the cam
With a healthy cam and set of World Castings Torquer 305 heads you should be very close to 250-60 horspower. Add headers, good exhaust system behind them, a better intake manifold and a larger carb and you should be at 300
As you can see, you'll probably have to replace almost everything, but the shortblock, so it's not gonna be cheap
Anyway I'm sure more people will have more suggestions for you... cya

Ported and polished heads, ported stock TPI base, ported plenum, Comp Cams XR270HR-10 cam (lift .495/.502 duration 218/224 lobe separation 110), Edelbrock TES headers, LT4 valve springs, Crane AFPR, Flowmaster catback with LT1 style tips, MSD coil & wires...
"Take that auto, drop it in first, hold the brakes, stomp the gas and grin from ear to ear! :-)

unfortunately, the amount of money you throw into a 305 to make 300 h, will net ya 400 on a 350....
think of it that way, 300 hp is easily obtainable from a 305

It's heads, cam, intake, and exhaust. Your Qjet will handle 300 HP, easy. I'm thinking that my L69 is now close to 275 HP right now with 416 castings... With WP S/R 305 heads and some porting, 300 HP would surely be there.
You might want to look around my web page for hints: http://www.isthq.com/~dan/fcar.html
my L69 uses a stock shortblock with minor relieving on the piston flycuts, modified 416 castings with full port/polish and 1.94" intake valves, Comp Cams XE262H cam (puurfect L69 cam!), Hooker aerochamber cat-back, Edelbrock headers, Edelbrock Performer intake, Comp roller-tipped 1.52 rockers, and the good ol' CLCC Quadrajet with CH secondary metering rods with ducted fresh air from the hood scoop. Don't forget, that Qjet of yours can flow 780 CFM through those secondaries! Some people don't know that. Besides, when the E4ME goes closed loop, it idles like a dream. I haven't seen ONE SINGLE trouble code since doing the modifications, and I get 21 MPG on the highway.
It's done a best of 14.400 at 98.6 MPH, using the stock converter. I am now installing a 2500 RPM converter and hope to turn in a 13 second quarter mile at 100.0 MPH. I shift at 6000 RPM with the new valvetrain.

Thanks for the help WS6TRANSAM, i appreciate it and your web page is pretty bad *** , nice car. Its not really that expensive to build up the 305 and im 18 and dont have enough to start with a 350 and the new transmission i would need. My cars an 85 Monte Carlo SS by the way so its got a POS 2004-r transmission.
It's lunch time and I'm bored, so I ran a quick simulation for a 305.
327 hp/6000 rpm
336 #'s/4500 rpm
With the following mods:
-9.15/1 C/R
-Zero deck (block milled to acheive this)
-Vortec 64 cc chamber heads (350 heads)
-Flat top pistons (-5 cc for two valve releifs)
-Dual plane manifold (performer rpm)
-600 cfm carb
-small tube headers and mufflers (1 5/8" primaries)
-cam 278/278 adv. dur, 450/450 lift, 108 LSA
This would be a simple build that would cost you about $1500 in parts plus machine work.

these guys are all right...but are you sure you want to put all that money into a 305????
What i am doing is buying the cheapest of the cheap engines from sdpc2000 (see ad). its a 350 with about 250hp for only $1300!!! Do the same mods these guys are talking about on that engine and youll have about 420hp. Just my plan. got the idea from Chevy High Performance Goodwrench Engine Build up. December 99 - july 2000 issues. good luck.

Check out the modifications in my signature I've done with my LG4. The bottom end of the motor is all stock and never rebuilt. My best quarter mile time has been a 13.5 so far. These other guys are right, its all about the heads, cam, and exhaust. Get the right combination set up right and you will be over 300hp no problem.

With your TPI you would get the same power with more torque and a much flatter torque curve, makes me wish had TPI. I know its a lot of money for a 305 but with vortec heads all the parts will work with a 350 or larger engine later so i think its a good investment. The only exception is the cam, I think I would get a more agressive one for a 350.

Nice Web page WS6!! I hope you don't mind me pointing out a little mistake in it though.
The 5.0 liter H.O. option actually started in 1983. I have a '83 Z28 with the duel snorkle air cleaner L69 option. Got the car cheap (wasn't running). I rebuilt the engine and am working on other things. I have what's in my sig. Nice car you have!
I'd like to know what tips you may have on getting your car to run smooth at idle. Mine's running rich. I have a Torker-2 intake I picked up for free, and I was contemplating putting it on, but there's no EGR opening. Is there a way to keep my E4Me carb, CCC, etc..?
------------------
Freshly rebuilt 19831/2 or 3/4 Camaro Z28 305 H.O. 3:73 Gears, BW T-5, Duel Snorkle, Rhino Clutch, 2040 Compu-cam, LS1 valve springs, porting, PST front end kit, K&N Filter and runs great but ain't streetable yet!!....Future Mods: Not yet decided if I'll keep it!

I found a "Chevy High Performance" mag. article from a December 1993 issue, on pages 108-110 called, "Potluck Buildup" using a 305 with:
AFR 190 cc Alum. cylinder heads, surfaced to obtain 58cc chambers, using 2.02/1.60 valves cutback to 1.99/1.55"dia. for clearance.
A recent (Sept. '00) price check with AFR confirmed a fully assembled price of $1,595 for a set of these heads.
A hydr.(non roller) AFR camshaft (2.18/.223 @ .050, .460/.470" valve lift using 1.5 rockers, 110 lobe separation, installed w/2 degrees of advance)was used. They used 1.6 ratio stamped-steel rocker arms. Compression ratio was measured at 8.87:1. This was with +.030" overbore, using TRW flattop pistons.
An Edelbrock Performer RPM intake was used with a Holley 650 Dbl. pmpr, & 1 5/8" dia. headers.
The dyno pulls resulted in 387 hp @ 6000 rpm, 368 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm.
They felt even more power was attainable using a custom chip & some fine-tuning. T
The final engine configuration was emissions legal, idled easily @ 750 rpm and maintained 340 lb-ft of torque in the 3000-6000 rpm range.
Yes, a 350 Chev. would put out more HP with these heads & similar mod.'s, but if you only have a $1,900 budget, this 305 project will put out more hp than a crate 350, and get better gas mileage to boot, without having the hassle of swapping in a new engine and the ability to "easily" do the job over a weekend by yourself.
Imagine adding a 145hp supercharger for increased low-end power, while retaining the
upper rpm performance for a 550hp 305.....

I believe it was CarCraft that got 300hp w/ World Products heads, and 325hp w/ milled Vortecs out of a LG4 bottom end. 218/224 cam, headers, diff carb, and a Edelbrock single plane intake (Super Victor on Vortec heads, Victor Jr on WP heads, or vice-versa can't remember).
To compare they made 350-360hp I believe in a later article putting those Vortecs, the same intake and cam onto a $600 rebuilt 350 shortblock that they mail ordered. Can't remember the company they got it from though, wanna say Powerhouse. I can't remember the torque output, anyone have that article?

Mine idles rich until it goes closed loop. I've turned in the idle mixture screws another half-turn this morning and it's helping the startup and idle. I've also leaned out the carb on the secondaries as well, and picked up 3 MPH in the quarter mile. Perhaps it's because I don't have EGR either?
