Do I NEED an aftermarket distributor?
I need some more experienced people to tell me what to do! I searched but it doesnt pick up words like "which" and "need" so I hope you guys dont mind my asking. Here are my circumstances:
- Got a 92 z28, 350.
- I've got the stock distributor and a bit of a stumbling problem so I decided to revamp my fuel and ignition systems to make them solid, know what I mean? Even if it doesnt cure the problem, it'll still be something solid, not 12 years old and suspect stock stuff.
- The motor is basically stock and I don't have plans to do crazy
mods for a long time, just stuff like headers, exhaust, stuff like that, and I just want the fuel/ignition in a good place to start,
- I ordered MSD coil, rotor, wires and a new fuel pump.
Heres the question: Do I need to buy a new, aftermarket distributor? Thats a big purchase if its unnecessary. I'm not looking for an excuse to not buy one really, I just want you guys to tell me if I need it or not. I wont hesitate to buy one if you guys say I need it. So what do I do? Thanks.

No, you dont need an aftermarket distributor unless you plan to turn in excess of 6000 rpms. A solid stock distributor with a new cap, rotor, pickup, and module will serve for many years of high performance. I made 381 rwhp with my natural 350 using the stock distributor. The MSD Pro Billet one that I have now has been nothing but problems for me. Aftermarket distributor = very low bang for buck

Thanks man, thats what I really needed to know. With my TPI intake, chances are slim that I'd be anywhere near 6000, and even if I made the mods to get there I'd probably buy a good distributor anyway!
Also, whats this pickup you speak of and do I need to replace it? What brand/model?
Also, we never hooked up! I'm dying to see your setup - you ever go to thunder valley in noble? I know it would be a drive for you but I dont know if there is a track over by you or not. Being an OU student, going to noble is easy for me lol! Thought you might be there every once and a while on the weekend!
Anyways, thanks.
