camshaft install concerns
hey guys.. there might be a possibility that i would be swain out some rebuilt heads for the worn out ones i got...
thinking i might get the ported and do a cam... problem lies here... my car has 160k on it, and my dad seems to think that doing the cam swap wouldnt be a good idea becuase the beaering for the cam in the motor would be way worn, and cause the cam to bounce around in them, and eventually spin one.
i know cuz it is an old motor is probably isnt worth the time or money, but the car smokes bad at startup... real bad. to the point where it is getting tougher to start by the week. (yes the igniton stuff is new and fine, i checked) the heads i would be getting for free, and could have ported for fairly cheap. the cam i could get cheap also. changing the cam would also solve my horribly loud lifter taps...
So how do you guys feel about this? would be a good mod to do, worth the extra power... wouldnt cost me much, give me a better running motor ect. in case anybody cares, i did a leak down test on the motor, and it has very low leak percentages for a 160k motor, which is why i am considering this. the car has mostly highway miles, behind 2,73 gears.... the leak down number i got for the motor were typical numbers for a motor with about 75k on it... which means the rings are in good shape, and there isnt much carbon build up in the motor yet. any ideas? luv to hear your suggestions too for a cam... prob be puttin an edlebrock intake on it, since that woudl go on the new 350, and i have a set of headers for it also... cam suggestions are welcome...still gonna use the computer crap though...

yo steve, dump the cam in it, i dont think a new cam is gonna bounce up and down
but change the timing chain and add a new set of lifters, then you'll be all set

well, the only reason i am really lookin to do anything to the motor is because i am gonna be lookin to sell it in the spring. i want to have another formula.. this time its gonna be a formula 350, and in GOOD shape. i am tired of having only ok stuff... ya know? kinda looking to have about 5k svaed up... i figuer that should get me a 87-91 formula 350 at a good price....
mayeb with a few nice mods done too! then hopefully i would have some money left over for little ****.
