Lame question about measuring cam lobes

Hey guys. I got a cam out of a Caprice cop car 350 engine and I want to know what the rough specs are on it. I was thinking... could I measure the lobe height with a dial caliper and get a ballpark idea of what the lift would be on this cam ? A buddy wants to buy it but he would like to know if it's any better than his L98 cam in this 90 GTA. Thanx

You need a dial indicator, not a caliper. Put the cam in a couple of wood v-blocks on the bearing journals so you can turn it. Find the lowest spot on an intake lobe, set dial to zero, then turn the cam to the high spot. That is the "gross" or "cam" lift. Repeat on an exhaust lobe.

Multiply your results by 1.5 for stock rocker ratio to get the "advertised" lift.

Put a degree wheel on it, and you can get the duration as well (multiply by two since the crank turns twice as fast as the cam, and duration is given in crank degrees).

You can get the hieght with a dial caliper if you pull the cam out of the engine..inside you'll need a dial indicator.

IF you have it out....just measure the hieght and the width, and subtract.

Take the part number, call the mfr, get the specs. that's what I would do.

The manufacturer is obviously GM. The cam is out of the engine also. Don't have a dial-caliper otherwise I'd do it that way and wouldnt ask about using a regular caliper. Anyway... I'll measure the lobes and substract like Jester suggested.
