454 truck engine hop up + nos q-s

Hello.

Some advice needed for a hot rodder friend of mine in Europe.

The car is a '82 Camaro Z28 with 454 and TH-400 from a '87 truck.

A feature of the car can be found at:
http://tqhq.ee/est/cars/lauri.htm

It is in Estonian of course, but the names'n'numbers are the same across the Atlantic too!

Note that the feature includes two sound samples. One with closed cut-out/Flowmaster Force II and other with open one revving to 6.7 K. Maybe they are of some help. Certainly a proof of low C/R.

- '87 truck 454, 4-bolt, 224/230 Extreme Energy, Edelbrock Performer (intake port matched), 750 Carter AFB. Heads milled 2 mm. C/R appr. 8.6

Guy wants to install NOS. I say 200 HP kit is OK. He hesitates, but agrees that the pistons and heads are expendable and 4-bolt is strong. Thoughts?

These peanut heads are meant to be thrown away of course, what about replacement? Guy wants to go fast on the 1/4 and FTFE.. 500+ hp motor/ 700+ with NOS with the current block. Oval/Rec port? Low budget!

Anyway, please know that the owner is a starving hot rodder/perf. parts store manager in the middle of a divorce so no space-tech please!

Thanks for your time,

He'll probably break stuff with 200hp NO2 shot, for sure, but sounds like he doesn't care. Even without NO2 under punishment, that motor will fail if run at 500 hp for any extended periods.

FYI, Performer intake is slowing him down. Should step up to Performer RPM or Torquer intake. Of course, better heads will reap more benefit with an intake change, but doing the manifold now is pretty cheap for the gains he owuld get. If/when he changes heads and has a better intake, he will be VERY happy.

Partel Roos,

Are you talking about Lauri's car? I still owe him a video of my car. I just have not had time to make it yet as I have been helping a friend with his NMCA/NSCA super street car. This weekend is the last race (in Orlando at the World street finals) and when I get back, I will make a copy of the video and send it over.

As far as the BBC goes, some ported oval ports will work for 500hp and the intake should be atleast a performer rpm or a single plane if just for racing. Cast crank and especially cast pistons will not last long at all with a 200hp shot, but if you decide to use it, use a progressive N2O controller to minimize the hit to the motor.

Good Luck,
Miles

Cam, intake, compression and carb will be too small for the demands expected on the engine. Bump the compression up to around 9.5 to 10:1 for 92 pump gas at least. It'll all depend on combustion chamber size and piston design. Peanut port heads make good door stops. Large oval port heads with big valves will do fine if the rpms stay below 6000. Rectangualar port heads are for engines that like to spin to 8000. Good aftermarket heads are Merlins from World Products. Pistons should be forged. Without NOS a cast crank will do fine. Strengthen the bottom end with main studs even with a 4 bolt. ARP fasteners on everything.

It's not hard to get 500-550 HP from a mild 454 with the right selection of parts. Adding a 200HP NOS kit will require some $$$ to make sure the engine will stay together.

I'm currently in the buildup of my big block. It'll put out somewhere between 500 and 550 HP and should put my car in the mid to low 11's. The only thing holding me back from wanting to go into the 10's is the diff. Once I get a 9", I'll go deeper.
