3 alternators and still guessing
ok here we go,
i have a 91 z conv. i installed a scroggin 350 vortec tip about one year ago.
a couple of weeks ago i changed the distributor cap and rotor to brass type. i also changed the coil to a high output accel.
after this was done i took the car for a drive and it missed like hell. i put the old coil back on and it ran fine. sooooo, got a new accel and put it on and it seemed ok.
the next day my one year warrenteed alternator went out 15 days after the warrenty expired. well those things happen...dang it!!
i went to auto zone and bought a life time warrenteed alternator and installed it. it fried about 4 hours later. i took it back and the guy suggested i may have a ground somewhere and gave me a new alternator
i took it home and looked for a gournd and found none. i installed it and everthing seemed fine. then the car developed a miss when up to temp. it is very minor and only at part throttle and only part of the time.
i mention this but i am not sure it is related.
because of the miss i reinstalled the old coil. that seemed to help but it still missed every once in a while.....this is getting wierd. suggestions?
its has been about 2 weeks since the new alternator and guess what? yep it fried it again today.
any of you smart folks out there wanna gimme sum suggestions i sure would preciate it.
thanks

why do u mean by the alternator fries? what exactly does it do? liek when u bring it to autozone and they test it, what do their test say about it? no voltage? bad diode?
low voltage can cause you to have a bad missfire.

the guage in the car drops way, way down. then i take it off and carry to the zone. they put it on the tester and tell me it is bad. that is all the explanation i got.
as for the fried comment, that came from the second one. the place where the battery cable hooks was partially melted on the second one. i did not look at the first one and havent pulled the third one off yet. i think it may have had a loose connection so i made sure the third was good n tight.
duh, on the low voltage comment. i should have thought of that.

Try a Delco instead of the cheap parts-store crap.
After my 4th or 5th Advance Auto alternator in one summer, I decided to move on to Delco.
I won't tell you all about my 1-month old delco alternator that tanked last night, but I will say that this is the first time I've had any problems with a delco alternator.

The Duralast parts arent bad per say its just easy to blame a cheap discount parts store part, millions are sold with no problems. ive actually had two in one week go bad last winter but all my other's work fine.
Asd far as buring the alternators up, check the battery to make sure it's fully charged before you install a new alternator. Newer computer controlled systems use alot more juice so the alternator has to work harder to charge a drained battery and keep the system going at the same time. Other options are gound wires or somthing hitting the field connexction shorting out the new alternator.

durahopeitlast gold number 3 now resides in my car. i guess it is gold, it has a life time warrenty. they said it was the best they had and it does have gold accents.
we checeked the voltage from the alternator and it read fine, 14.1, and at the battery it reads 13.9.
connections all look good. i did notice when i pulled the last alternator off that the bolt the hot wire was hooked to turned both ways. i had to hold it with a pair of pliers and use a wrench to get it loose. that don't seem quite right, if ya know what i mean.
i looked at all the connetions i could and dont see any problems.
oh ya, the miss is gone, guess it was the voltage drop.
i havent checked at the starter yet, but will do in the next couple of days.
thanks
