Heater Core, how hard to change?

I've got a Haynes manual, and I'm mechanicaly inclined. But how hard is this job, and are there any surprises I should know about?

Thanks in Advance,
Redbird

RB,

Check here on your other post: http://www.nethirdgen.org/ubb/Forum11/HTML/000518.html

BTW - I stayed in your town once when visiting the Big Easy. The hotel was right across the street from a little garage that had some boats stored in it. Imagine my surprise when I saw this rolling out on that Sunday morning - I just had to walk over there to get photos:

I did mine about 4 weeks ago following the Haynes manual instructions. I don't know how much difference there is between an '82 Camaro and an '87 Firebird, but it took me a little over 4 hours.

The only omission from the manual was removal of the shifter **** before removing the shifter plate. I had the dash and console out during the engine swap, so I had an idea what I was up against before starting this time.

It's not a complicated procedure, just very annoying!!!! Here's where you might become annoyed:

1. Unbolting all the stupid little screws that hold on the dash and console that conceal the heater core.

2. Figuring out which way to turn the heater core to get it to slide into position, and even then you have to force it.

3. Pulling the hoses off the heater core (under the hood side). This was the hardest part, I dont remember how I got them off but my car sat for a few days while I worked the hoses off. Now I have a dremel and I could have just cut the pipe, but I didnt then.

4. You will probably have to lay backwards on the passenger seat (with it reclined) to comfortably (haha) get at the heater core.

5. Hope you have small hands.

6. I replaced mine and my heater still doesn't work. Doh.

It's not that hard. I did it in my 89RS. It took me a afternoon and a chilton manual.

One tip I can offer is to use zip lock bags to store the screws in. I labeled the bags and drew a small diagram to tell me where the screws came from. It made reassmebly a snap.

Thanks Guys for all the input

Everyone else seemed to have the most trouble removing the hoses....
I think I'll start there, everything else should be a breeze
Somebody else also mentioned removing the pass. seat, I think I'll try that to.
It's not like the winters down here are brutal, but it would be nice to have a defroster.
If all goes well it'll be in by sunday!

Vader, yea, Al Copeland has some nice toys!(that was a very small portion of them)
You must have stayed at the Landmark Hotel, my house is less than 10 minutes from there
