700R4 to 383 help please >>>>
Lastnight I tryed to stab my 700r4 on my 383 heres what I did and what went wrong *I think*....
1) got top dead center and stabbed distributer.
2) bolted on balanced 400 flywheel
3) bolted on torque converter
4) stabbed trans
However the trans stopped about 1/2" away from the block. I started the thread on the bellhousing and tightened them until it pulled the trans mission tight but it doesnt seem right!
Shouldnt it stab all the way?
Am I supposed to put the converter on the trans first then stab it?
If so how do I tighten the bolts?
There are two shafts coming out of the front of the transmission bellhousing and only the inside turns no matter if I change the gears .

Hey Rafael (remeber me? I was the one at WCG2K without my red '84 Z28 riding with Andy89RS
), what you need to do is install the torque converter in the trans FIRST, then rotated it while pushing it in. You should hear/feel it click three times. This is so that the converter hooks up with the pump and other stuff (sorry, don't know auto that well
) in the trans to make it function right. Then you install it on the flexplate. Good luck.

YIKESS!!!! Whatever you do, DON'T try to pull the trans up to the motor that way with the bolts!!! You will waste the pump. Quit while you're ahead!!!!!!!!!
You need to pull the trans back out, and put the TC on the trans first. There are 2 slots in the end of the TC hub that engage "ears" on the pump. With the trans laying on the ground, put the TC in it, & rotate while pushing it in; it should eventually go in to where the bolt holes on the TC are about 1" behind the BH flange. When it goes all the way in you'll feel it, and you'll hear a sort of gear sound as you turn it. Then you should be able to "stab" it up in there with no problem whatsoever.
Good luck!

, but you added info I forgot.
Hey RB, since your in So-Cal now, why not join the two clubs in my sig (SCFB and SC3GFB)? Maybe we can hook up and I can finally check out that 400 beast of yours.

Before you try to put it again, you should probably check the pump as mentioned, and you might have also torn the seals.

Good news everyone!
I BROKE MY TRANSMISSION
I didnt notice the two damn teeth *or whatever* on the tip of my converter. By forcing the transmission on when I threaded the bolts I broke one of the teeth on the shaft that connects to the converter!!!
Anybody know how much that piece will cost?
And yes I remember you bro! Give me a call

or I'll call you I need some advice
THANKS MAN!

I have a question. On a 383 are you supposed to use the 400 flywheel or the standard 350 one? I had my rotating assembly balanced with a 350 flywheel.....did I make a mistake?
Trending Topics
383 is 350 w/400 crank that is externally balanced. Need the 400 flexplate, my man. Did you start the engine w/that flexplate? Probably vibrate to pieces, no?
trans problems: Call the trans shop or bring the tranny right to the shop. They will give you an estimate and it should be a one-day turnaround for you.

Paul and FastBroker, it depends on the crank design for the rear seal. Many 383 cranks are not 400's, but custom made for the 1pc or 2pc seals. For 1pc rear seal cranks, you use the 350 flywheel for a 1 pc crank. The bolt pattern on the crank and flywheel is smaller than the crank/flywheel pattern on a 2 pc rear seal setup. So if somebody is using a 400 crank (2pc rear seal), then they use the 400 flywheel.
Some machine shops will remove and/or weld in new balance material for the 350 flywheels to help achieve balance as they do the rotating assy.
