VATS or Starter?
Sometimes when I try to start my car, it just goes 'click', 'click', 'click', over and over again. I can always eventually get it to turn over without any problems, but some days it's really bad and eventually it just stops clicking and I have to leave it alone for a while. I figured that my starter contacts were bad, but I heard that it may be the VATS. It's been doing this for almost a year, maybe longer. Wouldn't the starter have gone out by now? What do you think it is? By the way, what's the deal with a lot of the thirdgen electrical components (power windows, etc.) being junk?

It sounds like a weak starter solenoid IMO. Heat affects it and the solenoid will draw more power for it to work. But make sure the connections at the starter are tight first.
If it were VATS, nothing will happen when you turn the key and the 'security' light will stay on. So, I don't think it's the VATS.

I agree with IROCZZ3. What you describe is a classic starter problem. When my VATS was going, you'd turn the key and NOTHING happened. It never made ANY sound whatsoever. I can't remember, but I think even the fuel pump wouldn't "pressurize" for the first 2 seconds like it normally does when your turn the key.
Above post is right. If it were VATS, the starter solenoid would not operate (click).
I suspect that the contacts on the solenoid are poor, which is why you just hear the solenoid pulling in (clicking). When it pulls in, it is supposed to make contact for the battery to supply current to the starter motor (in addition to engage the gear). If the contacts are not good, all you'll hear are the clicks. If the contacts are marginal, you may be able to make contact if you do it repetedly, but it probably will not get better with time.
Also as stated above, check that the battery connections at the battery and the starter to be sure they are not only tight, but clean. That could very well be all that is wrong.
If it only happens when it's hot, then it may be heat related.
