causes of blown head gasket?

thinking of buying a car around here, but i know a little history of the car, and supposedly blew the head gasket, then had the motor rebuilt and then blew it again. what causes the head gasket to blow? i dont want to buy a car thats been beat on like no other, and it sounds like it has been, but i can easily be wrong... any help appreciated. thanx!
