Rearend is acting up.
Rearend is acting up.
My car was fine until I replaced the cat with a straight pipe. Now, every time I take off with any force the rearend or tranny pops with such force that it jars me. It also does this when shifting to second. It is an automatic. Does anybody know what could be? When I say taking off with force, I mean pushing it about a 1/4 of the way down. Oh yeah, It's a V-6.

First off I'd say check the tranny mount. Just in case, its at the tail end of the transmission, there is a stel crossmember held on w/ 4 bolts, plus the one for the tranny mount, remove 'em all, if the rubber seperates from the steel seat, the mount is bad, if the rubber is loose, the mount is bad. (I had one die because the knucklehead owner before me didn't use locktite on the trans mount nut...) When mine died, I could feel the transmission hit through the center console.
If the rear end is bad, it should make a constant clunking that increases w/ rpm.
I have never experienced bad U-Joints on my driveshaft before so I am not sure what that actually feels like, but I know when shifting into drive, or reverse it can cause a clunk.
Hope it isn't anything serious!

On my car when i had bad u-joints, I could put it in Reverse or Drive from park and it would clunk, plus jar the driver and any passengers. (not good for that hot date on friday night) Myself...I could rotate the driveshaft with ease....Right now mine is as solid as a rock.

Yeah, I feel it hit in the console, right behind the shifter. It doesn't do that when I ease off from a stop or shift to drive or reverse. I'll check the mount. I have a friend with a '92 who had to replace his. Thanks for the info.

Check your torque arm bushing too. Mine is shot and it makes a thud sound when I get on it and it shifts... Go poly urethane for that one, stock rubber for the tranny mount.
