Car jerks when put in D or R

Whenever my car (88 camaro 305TBI/Auto) sets for a while and you start it up, it idles at around 1500-1750 and when you put it in reverse or drive it will jerk in that direction and the idle goes down below 1000 and is fine from there. What could cause the idle to be so high at startup, but ease out later and be fine? Thanx.

Thats just the fast idle kicking in when the motors cold. If when you take off quick from a stop you hear knocking from around the tranny, and with your current problem, you might want to take a look at the tranny mount.

your tranny mount is fine. its just your engine idling high to warm up. if you let it warm up for 5-10 minutes like you should, it wont do that. or if you start it again after its warm it wont jerk right?? cause the park idle is lower when its warm. it natural. my ride does it too. just be patient and give your engine that extra 5 minutes in the morning. :-)

#1. High idle is from a cold start or a havn't-drive-it-in-a-long-time start. Mine goes around 1100 every morning when I leave the garage around 6AM. In about 30 secs, it's at least around 800. The idle should drop when in a driving gear.
#2. If you have a bad tranny mount, it should, as mentioned on above posts, make a "thungk" type of sound on a hard launch. The padding between the tranny and the mount is worn or cracked.

how long does it take for the idle to come down??? It shouldn't take more than a minute to come down to 900 or 1000... and if you are putting it in gear before then you are not doing your car any favors... give it a few minutes to warm up...

As soon as it's put into gear, the idle comes down below 1000 to around 800 and is fine. I had the mount replaced about 6 months ago so I'll have it check today on the way home. Thanx for the help everyone.
