85,

Most spray-type carburetor cleaners are made for this purpose. The major risk in doing this is stalling the engine. I'd rather have the cleaner get burned with the rest of the fuel/air mixture than have it pool up and get sucked into the cylinders all at once when starting. Excess raw cleaner in the clyinders carrying all the flushed-out varnish can foul a cylinder and wash down the oil on the cylinder walls.

Unless you remove the carb for cleaning, I'd rather do most of it while the engine is running. The exceptions would be opening the throttles wide to clean the bottoms of the bores and idle and intermediate fuel ports.
