valve guides cause white smoke??

hey guys i have around 3,000 mile son my new engine, i broke it in for 500 miles like they say to and everything, but now i get puffs of smoke every once in a while. when i got the heads they had horrible carbon buildup on the back of the valves, i had to use a knife and wire wheel to get it off and it came off in chunks. now i figured the it was the valve stem seals cause they were broken and floating on the valve, so i cleaned the heads up and put some nice valve seals on them. now when i shift at like 5 grand racin people every1 says that i let out a puff of white smoke and sometimes i will start it and get a little bit but nuthin huge. now my question is can bad valve guides be causeing this or are my rings just not seated and the motor is trash?? oh yea, put a new intake gasket on a few hundred miles ago and u coudl see carbon startin to build on the valves already. any input is great guys. thanks

did you check your valve to guide clearance? if it was good it's not likely they wore out in the little bit you've drove it. the smoke may be nothing, i've saw boat load of cars do it racing that had no engine problems. smoke on start up is sign of bad seals, but could also be guides, but you should know the condition of your guides and seals both.

well wut i am saying is mayeb the guides were alreayd bad on the heads, cause i heard massive carbon buildup on the valve is a sign of bad valve guides. the valve seals are brand new cranes

ok well i just went outside and i was messing with my ac delete pully cause it was makin a clicking sound. well i go to back out of the garage and i get to the fence, jump out and open it and when i turn aroudn i lok at my tailpipes and there is white smoke coming out, like not thick heavy white smoke that covers everyting but its like just enough to notice it. i mean if u can actually see white smoke coming out the exhaust at idle then sumthing is totally fried cause thats alot of oil burnin. so do u guys think the motor is goin to the ****ter cause i think its gettin worse. if this motor is goin i pretty much hope it blows with me in it. man i am sooooo pissed. i am getting a huffy and pedaling my *** around for now on.

I thought blue smoke=oil ,black=fuel ie rich mixture, white=water/coolant in engine. Mind it could be blowing water condensation out the exhaust but at worse could be head gasket gone.

you say these are brand new Crane seals? Do you mean they are the teflon seals or are the the rubber type. If they are teflon seals then you can expect them to wear out in about 3000 miles if your valve train geometry isnt spot on, and you will loose about 1 quart of oil down the guide about 1000 miles.

im having the same exact problem. well except the carbon build up, but the same smoke. mine smokes a little once in a while on start-up, maybe 1 out of 5 times. then i also get a little smoke at while im shifting at higher RPM's.

i really am not worrying about it to much, since the engine is just re-built 1,500 miles ago, and it runs perfect (well other then the out of tune carb and crapy exhaust ) and also the engine is getting a new bottom end this winter

however, you are losing more oil then me, i've only loss about 1/4 quart in about 800 miles.

IMO, i wouldnt worry about it, unless it gets worse. one of my friends has a 406, with around 6,000 miles after a performance build, and his smokes the same exact way also. maybe its a SBC problem?

these are the ones i got. ok guys i think i migth know wut it is. i put on these seals then i also put on liek little rubber o-rings that are more squared on the edges then liek a normal o-ring. i thoiught u used both but i am starting to find out that u either use one or the other right? oh yea and these seals in the pic push over the valve guide and stay in place when u move the valve up and down. well heres the pic and this is what it says I]"Crane Teflon seals provide maximum valve stem oil control. These seals wipe excess oil from the valve stem by means of a unique spring-loaded wiper assembly, thus preventing unwanted oil from reaching and contaminating the cylinder."[/I]

I had that same exact problem. White smoke on start up and white smoke at higher rpms with my rebuilt motor. Cabon build-up as well. I took the motor apart a couple weeks ago and almost all my seals were cracked. I think the guides were bad on it due to a poor machine shop where I had them done.

ok good so it has to be that, theres a bunch of people on here saying its not oil and i have coolant burning cause its white smoke, but there no way i blew a head gasket cause the car runs great
