"the" starter/block defect?

well, i just put in a 350. it used to start better, but now sometimes i hear a grinding noise when trying to start it. i ran a search and found that there was a problem with where the machines used to drill the holes for the starters. is it possible that the engine that i just got (350 H.O.) has that problem? when i installed the starter i even thought to myself that the starter gear couldnt move over enough to engage it all the way. i put one shim in the starter. also, i lost one of the starter bolts so i used a regular bolt, could that be the problem? thanks for the advice.

also, one other thing i noticed is that when the car fires, it sounds like the starter sticks a little bit(split second) that should help to diagnose it. thanks

The factory starter bolts are slightly oversize on the shank to provide a snug fit in the hole so the starter can't shift.

bolt holes in starter= 7/16" starter bolts =3/8" that very well may be your problem and if it isn't it will be soon enough

you can find replacement start bolts in the red "Help!" section of your local auto parts store.

If the block is newer than about 80 or 81, which it would obviously be if this is the GM "350 HO" repacement motor, chances are it doesn't have the problem with the bolt holes. Get the right bolts and life should be better.

well i got a new bolt and put in it in. however while i was under there i took a picture of the starter. if you look at the shaft that the starter gear is on, it looks like there is a washer type thing that holds the gear back from engaging completely on the flexplate. is this normal? thanks

also, are the teeth on the starter gear supposed to lean a little more in one direction, or is my starter toast?
