I would think you would want a manual transmission and a 305 or 350 that's not to far off of stock. Say about 300HP tops maybe more if you can get away with it for class restrictions.
I would also think you would want good highway gears like 2.73 or 3.23 gears. I know next to nothing about autocross but what I said makes sense based on the concept I think.
As I understand it suspension is one of the main things. I would get the STB the wonderbar and SFC's. Once again all that you can get away with in your class.
How does one get into Autocross anyway? I have heard that third gens kick *** for it.

everything has to be from 82-92.. engine, trans. rear end... i can change the intake manifold and i can use a carb of my choosing as well as headers.... suspension is critical.... i can do alot with aftermarket suspension stuff... also tires are open as long as D.O.T. approved..
what i think i need is 60 M.P.H. in first gear...auto trans...you have NO time to be shifting....
as for getting into autocrossing go to www.scca.com and look fo a chapter near you... and ask some questions... this season and 1/2 of last season i've been using my '94 F-150 Lightning..and not doing all that bad.... i beat an '01 GT Mustang last weekend by .042 sec.

you really need to get specific class rules, pick a class, and built it for that class.
SFC's are most likely going to be out. i have them on my car, and have to run CP because of it. which pits my daily driver against full on stripped down, trailered, race cars.
suspension is critical, with the tightness of auto-x courses, you want a VERY stiff suspension. i think in almost every class 1le sway bars are acceptable, i would get those. if you have to run factory springs, get IROC springs, they are stiffer than ws6 springs. shocks, again depending on the rules, if you can go Koni. brakes. do any brake mod that is allowed for you class. braking is where you will win races.
and of course the most important part is the driver
get lots of seat time.
