"Surging" Alternator?
"Surging" Alternator?
This one's been driving me nuts.....Voltmeter will fall to about 8V, then back to ~14V...back & forth, back & forth. Have replaced alternators, batteries, wiring, connectors.;.....aaaarrrrggghhh! Is there any type of relay in the charging circuit? When it surges, i can hear a "click" and the engine "tune" changes....can actually "hear" the charging system surge....luckily it hasn't stranded me.....yet! Any help would be hugely appreciated!

is that a remanufactured alternator w/ a lifetime warranty? May not hurt to go exchange it for another but read the fine print b/c some say lifetime warranty but say only 2 exchanges allowed...no really lifetime warranty then is it??
Have you had it tested at a local shop that rebuilds alternators? They should tell you real quick if it's the internals in the alternator acting up. That clicking sounds like a relay. There was another discussion yesterday on one of these message boards in thirdgen.org about a similar problem.

Thanx for the qwik response. Yeah, its a reman, but ive already traded it 5 times (yes 5) and 2 of those were crap right out of the box. This one I have now lasted all of last summer and up till now this summer. What really puzzles me is the "click" and the fact that its definately affecting the way it runs......
