Effect of air into exhaust manifolds???

Does the introduction of air into the exhaust manifolds via the air pump/diverter valve affect performance?

If it does, it is negligable. The only problem I could see with them is the air is injected at a 90º angle to the exhaust flow. This may cause some turbulance that could impede airflow, but I think the exahust pulse would easily overcome it. Also, I'm not too sure when the computer switches from the injection of the manifolds to the cat. so it may be a non issue after the engine warms up.
