Anyone have TES headers on an L69??
I know this is more of an exhaust related question but I'm not getting any feedback on that board. Has anyone installed TES headers with an L69? everything went fine until I went to connect the y-pipe.. the EFE (heat riser) valve doesn't fit. The instructions say to turn it backwards but that doesn't work either.. I can mod it to fit but then it won't be functional. Just ticks me off because they are suppost to be direct bolton fully emissions legal...
thanks
thanks
Who needs a heat riser anyway... throw that **** away. Unless u live in 0 degree climates that's not needed.

i had a problem installing those headers on my 86 lg4 engine. the only diff between yours and mine (speaking of tes headers) is that mine is a slip on cat and your is bolt on. i had a little trouble putting that EFE peice of crap on. i had to bend the little connector pipe to get it around the bell housing to make it fit. i heard that it makes no difference in anything. it just heats up your engine a little faster.

TES headers, flowmaster cat back, performer manifold, TCI converter, jet chip, kn with dual snorkel cleaner. and she still passed the sniffer!

Well I took the vacuum acculator off and locked the butterfly open. fits but now I noticed a new problem... the fuel lines on the pass side almost touch the header where the efe valve is.. I put some insulation in between but don't know if that is good enough.

I'm using TES headers. What I did with regard to the fuel line was make up a steel heat shield which is sandwiched between the fuel lines and the headers. You can loosen the brackets that hole the fuel lines and move them down a little bit, which should improve the air gap to 3.4 inch. Place the heat shield in-between the fuel lines, and wrap it over the fuel lines. Attach it to the frame rail with sheet metal screws. I haven't had any problems with it ever since. Your job may be more complicated if you still have A/C. I tok mine out and the heat sheild installation became trivial.

I have a 400 in my 83, but still have the OE exhaust behind the headers.
When I put the TES in mine, I removed the heat riser's diaphragm; removed the shaft by breaking off the blade, then cutting it in half; tapped the holes to 1/8" pipe, and put plugs in there; and cut the various "ears" off of it with a hack saw except for the ones around the bolts. It still comes real close to the frame, maybe 3/8" or so, but doesn't seem to hit it.
You do have to leave it in there, because of the flanges, plus the amount of space it takes up. I can't believe some of the things I've seen people do in the process of rigging up exhaust, and I refuse to do any of that, especially with something that fits as well overall as the TES does. Mine fits the car tighter than the OE did, and seems to be totally leak-free.
BTW - the gaskets that came with it failed in less than 2 months. Don't waste your time putting them in there unless you don't mind re-doing them soon. I got the Mr. G copper ones, they solved the problem. My heads (somewhat enhanced 186s) required the large-port version, yours will probably work OK with the standard-port one if you still have the 416 heads.
Like ws6 mentioned, check your fuel line clearance; I also experienced an issue there, but was able to get about 1½" of space, so I didn't have to go to the trouble he did.
