Smog Pump and Emissions Question ? ?
Hey Guys I have a 1991 305 , TBI and I am wanting to rid of its emissions. Someone suggested to me to go and cut off all those metal tubes that recurculate air and just weld them shut or put bolts in them and then I can rip out all the hoses and tubes and really clean up the motor. I don't have to worry about emissions testing and so forth so this will work for me if I can do it. I was wondering if this will work and what I'll all have to do to make it work, and because like a bunch of those hoses come together to this one plastic connector which has a vacum line running out of it... so would i be able to just block the vacum line off ?? and that whole assembly right behind the A/C there take all that out... this is just a thought right now and I need some major input here on if it will work what i'll have to all do and so forth.. your input is greatly appreciated thx alot....
oh ya one more thing..... when i turn my A/C on the ****er just squellls really loud and the car goes into a rough rough idle like it is ggoing to die... then after a bit the squealin will stop and it will be fine... sounds really bad and almost kills the car... any ideas ??? thx..

You can eliminate the smog pump easily. Those Tubes attached to the manifolds can be taken off and the holes plugged with plumbing brass squared headed pipe plugs from a hardware store.I think its 1/4' threads. Is it a serpentine belt or a V belt. The manifold vacum port can be plugged up and all those hoses etc that pertain to the smug can be taken out. Including your charcoal cannister (that black can up by your driver side headlight) Just Trace everything that comes from the smog pump and Triple check it all before you remove anything.

also instead of just plugging off those crappy restrictive stock manifold now would be an excellent time to add headers

You can do away with it all if you want to. Like mentioned above the air tubes at 1/4'' pipe thread. You could be able to find the plugs about anywhere. You can reroute your belt like mentioned in the tech article. Its real simple...all of it comes off without even throwing a code.

no idea what its going to do for your power probably add 1-2 hp but nothing special. One of the big things emissions wise is the egr id look at ditching that that might give you a bit of a hp boost. Man you are the luckiest person ever id kill to not have to pass emissions tests. Tear out smog pump, egr, cats just gut it all it will save you a bunch of weight and would almost certainly net you some form of hp boost while cleaning up your engine bay. The only thing to watch out for is they are slowly incorporating emissions tests everywhere so id do some research because there are some places that dont have them now that will have them in a few years.

I didn't really gain anything by taking mine out I dont think... its isn't faster and mileage didnt really change... I took it all out just because the less stuff there is, the less can go wrong.

I agree w/ 89 RSPower about getting new headers. You won't have to buy the expensive smog headers, and you will be able to take off the manifolds for more room while you work on the emissions stuff. You will surely notice a difference then.
