Remove Charcoal Canister?
Remove Charcoal Canister?
I think it's causing vacuum leaks. If I wanted to eliminate it, how would I re-route the vacuum lines? Thanx in advance!

I wouldn't remove it because it does play an important role in elimintating your gas fumes and helps your gas mileage. It shouldn't be causing a vacumn leak unless your canister is busted or the lines have cracks in them. Check all the lines real closely and your EGR vacumn lines, they tend to break real easily if you have the stock hard vacumn lines still on the car.

Not sure when the EGR valves first came out but they were on all GM cars in the late 70's. THe 89 vette motor would definetly have had one from the factory. Are you using the TPI or a carb? If your running the TPI you could be having computer problems from the EGR not being on the car.
What makes your think you have vacumn leaks in the first place? Are you getting any trouble codes set on the check engine light? If so what are they?
Put some more info on your car in your sig like your fuel system type, mods done to the car, ect.

It is the TPI setup. The reason I was looking for leaks is because I have the famous "surging idle". As far as my SES light, I have some wiring problem or something because the light does not work. I tore the dash apart, looking for the "exciter" wire that goes to the alternator from the idiot light, and while it was apart, I put all new bulbs in there, but I have still never seen the light work. Just another one of those goofy little problems.....

If the charcoal canister is saturated, maybe due to overfilling the gas tank, it can in theory cause excessive vapor pressure in the gas tank which can get past the canister purge valve when it's closed and make the engine run rich. ECM will lean out the mixture to compensate, but when the vapor pressure drops the engine will run lean and ECM will again try to compensate.
It's something to check in any case.

Qaz, glad you put that explanation on regarding the saturated canister and overfilling the tank. I was told that by a
GM tech but when I mentioned it here, the response was less than enthusiastic. Glad you were able to explain it...bob
