The vortec's would probably make more power in the end...but you've got to get some machining to keep your compression from going to hell. Look into either a torker II or a Performer RPM if you decide to go with the L98s.

The Aluminum L98s will bolt right on with the 58cc chambers and not drop compression. Big plus. The AL L98s are the perfect 305 heads out of the box IMO (and that's all I like them for, they don't flow well enough to be a kickass 350 head. relatively stock that is).
The vortecs will flow more and make more power, but you'll want to have them shaved and run a thinner head gasket to retain some of the compression. Otherwise you'll be way down on comp... The Vortecs are cheaper too(assuming both set of heads are new anyway), so cost wise you might still come out about the same after the milling vs the L98s.
