Need help with a CAM
Hey all, I have a 79 4 bolt main bone stock 350 that is going to go in my 82 Z28. I would like to freshen up the motor and put in a bigger cam for a little more get up and go. Eventually I will sink some money in to the motor, but the 383 kit just wont squeeze in the budget. So I just want better than stock but good driveablilty and something that wont mind shorty headers and stock heads. Thanks in advance for the help.

I would go with something like a compcams Xtreme Energy XE-256H.. DO NOT go overboard... Ive done it and hated it!!
Description: Hydraulic- Strong torque through low end & mid range, good idle
Stats: 212/218 Duration @ .050 .447 and .455 lift (with 1.5 rockers) on a 110 LCA...
Not a huge cam, but If your not modding much more, then stick with a fairly small cam to keep your drivability/gas milage up. along with making more HP!
Hydraulic cams are cheap too, so if you do decide to go with heavier mods later....... you arent spending $300 to buy a new one and install it

Thanks for the insight. I think I will go with that cam. Is there anything special to replacing a SBC cam? I am used to Fords so bear with me. Does the cam have to be degreed? Thanks again.

Degreeing a cam isnt neseccary.....
Almost ALL new chevy cams have a 4 degree advance built in, including this one....
the built in advance takes out the need to degree, as most people use it to advance the cam. Since the cam had the 4* built in you can just install it straight up......
other will argue that cam degreeing is neseccary, but I have never degreed a cam yet.......after 6 motors in my S-10, 3 in the 86 Camaro, and who knows how many in the race car.....
Now to get a motor for my new 89 Formula 350!
Good luck, you can google search(www.google.com) tons of information on how to install the cam
