Is my starter dieing?
Is my starter dieing?
Just wondering if anyeone has come acrossed this problem.
You know when the car is ALREADY running and you turn the ignition, like your going to start the car, and that starter lets out that g0d awful grinding noise.
Sometimes and I stress sometimes (1 out of 40 starts) my car will make that noise.......sometimes it will do it twice in a row, but after that she starts right up with no problem......
Is that a sign of a dieing starter?

I would do some checking first.
Get under there and make sure the starter bolts are tight.
Then inspect the flexplate and starter gear for damaged teeth.

I'm sorry to say I don't know what a flexplate is or how to check the gears, come to think of it.....I don't even know where the starter is......
G0D what newbie.....
I'm sure I could figure out tho....I'll take a look at it tonight.

its on the passanger side of the block towards the tranny, remove the inspection cover from the bellhousing so you can inspect the teeth on your flexplate and starter, check the starter bolts and make sure they are tight, if there isnt any teeth damage you might just need to shim it slightly
edit - a flexplate is a lot like a flywheel, except its for an automatic transmission and instead of having a machined surface for a clutch to engage it simply has 3 holes and bolts to your torque converter

I actually had a similar problem, but did not really care, until I really got pissed and checked my starter. When I removed it out the gears had changed shape and mu whole starter was gone. After replacing the starter, i have had no problems

The starter soleniod could also be damaged. Causing it not to disengage when its supposed to. Starts are pretty cheap ~30$.
I recommend getting a repair manual and studing it some. Seems like your new to the game
