Waking up a 195hp L42?
I need some suggestions for waking up a yuck 195 hp L42 350 engine. As of now its stock with minor bolt on's coil high flow exhuast very minor stuff. I'm think some 416's like Vader did with 195's stuffed in should give it a respectable compression gain. The goal is increased tq & hp to make it run like it should and leave the emmisions easy to hook back up in 5 years. Along with the beffed up 416's cam change will happen but need advice on somthing that WILL GIVE NICE ALL AROUND POWER. Intake will be swapped for a stealth carb is still up in the air but the q-jet is going one way or another.
Suggestions are very much needed.
Thanks!

Get rid of that dumpy POS cam and get something with some real lobes on it, not just a mild swelling

I'd think twice before chucking the QJet. Once they are properly tuned there isn't another carb that will give you such excellent mileage and foot to the floor power! You DEFINITELY want to talk to five7kid (who is right in Littleton--your neck of the woods) and Damon, not to mention F-Bird'88 and Vader. These four lads will have you smiling from ear to ear with the way they can EASILY help you set up that QJet
The 305 heads are a good choice for a port and polish. Put 1.92" intake valves in and you'll get really good power.
For a cam I'd suggest the Crane PowerMax 266 or the Comp Extreme Energy 262. With your 350 this combo should put out near 350 hp, assuming you also have headers and a good 3" exhaust.
This will be a fun engine that gets excellent mileage, with lots of bottom end torque and higher end hp, too
For instance, my mods are similar to that but with an LG4 305 as the starting point. Bone stock, with 2.73 rear gears, it got 18 mpg around town. Not bad but get a load of this: With the mods in my sig, which basically doubled the LG4's hp, and a set of 3.42 rear gears I now get 19.5 mpg around town!
Now that's the sort of engine building that pays for itself!!!
