Clakity Clak! NOISE__Valve lash??!?!

LG4-84 Berlinetta

From the moment I start up the car, there is an audible "Clakity clak clak clak clak clak calkity clakity clakity clakity clak clakity clak clak" coming from the engine. I thought it may be my rocker arms/lifters knocking. What could this sound be?

Sound:
-happens in idle, as explained
-increases with rpm

Any help is greatly appreciated!
My brother said it is rod knock, which means a helluva bunch more work.

Tonite, I removed both valve covers and listened for the noise, it seems to be coming from the 2, 4, 6, 8 cylinders...somewhere near there. I tinkered with it a bit by tightening each rocker arm 1/4 in at a time, 2 times each...sound is still the same.....have any idea?

could you be mistaking the noise for an exhaust leak?

This is definitely not an exhaust leak, of that i am certain.

I was thinking it was what i described earlier, rod knock, or bolts on the engine mounts.....which i doubt. The sound is very irrhythmic.

Yeah it sounds like rocker arms. I've been listening to that sound for the past week because my stupid cam won't work and the valves are all messed up.

how many miles are on this thing. i had a 350 that had about 150000 miles on it and the rings werent replaced with the rebuild and i ended up with piston slap. it sounds like a very rapid clackin noise.

This is the original engine as it was bought in 83. I doubt there has been anywork done to the engine but a replaced valve cover gasket i found out.

I may shoot for the liquid wrench idea as well. Id hate to think its worn rings because that work is beyong my scope of knowledge and financial ability at the moment.

the rocker arms and top-side of the heads look pretty grimey. I noticed that the pcv fitting for the air cleaner assembly was missing from the valve cover....allowing dust and dirt and little crabs to find their way in there.

I have a couple buds coming over tonite to check things out.

So far we have:

-Loosen each arm til it clicks, tighten it til it doesnt click anymore, then add a 1/4 turn to that
-Liquid wrench for 15 minutes, then change oil

any other ideas?

not good....

it isnt the rocker arms being loose....

most likely piston slap or perhaps a wrist pin so im told.

I dont have the time to rebuild this 305 or even salvage what i can and put on a 350 tall-block. 80% chance I'm parting this car out now.

piston slap is more of a clunking sound. or aknocking, not a ticking noise. sounds like oil starvation still, try the liquid wrench
