I decided to replace the positive and negative cables on the 71. After I am done, I start the car, cool, no problem. I go to turn it off, it won't stop! So I hit my HEI anti-theft kill switch and the Temp and Alternator idiot lights stay lite on the dash! WTF???? I checked all the wires. I have one wire off the negative cable on the battery heading to the frame and one wire off the positive cable on the battery, heading to the voltage regulator. I am thinking something with the solenoid, but the only wire I found on the solenoid is the main battery cable. Am I missing something?
I really gotta ditch the voltage regulator and get a modern alternator.

Sounds to me like the wires on the starter are touching, such that the big red wire/battery cable terminal is touching the "R" terminal... since that terminal goes straight to the low side of the ignition switch, guess what...

Thanks for the advice, I am thinking that has to be it but I felt around and could find no other wires on the solenoid other then the main cable. I am gonna drop the starter tomorrow and see for sure. Thanks... amazing, try and fix one thing and cause a host of other problems!
