Does this mean i dont have a speed limiter?

Ok so im going on the freeway tonight...(Ive only had my camaro for about a month and 3.5 weeks it was being painted)...and happened to get my 91 RS up to 110...and further. It felt like it had a lot more to go and i was probably at about 115 before i got to my exit :0)...Ive heard people say the speed limiter cuts off at 110...does this mean my limiter is possibly disabled or i dont have one?

i'm not sure but i think if you had a z car without z-rated tires from the factory you had a speed limiter

Yeah, only cars with 16"s had no speed limiter on them. May be exeptions tho, but all 15"s should have the limiter. Stock 15" tires were only good to 120mph or so.

I have 16" rims, and I have a speed limiter. My car is clocked for 190km/h, and it will cut out slightly after 190 and drop to about 185 before kicking in again.

How do you get rid of the speed limiter???

There should not be a speed limiter on WS6 Firebirds.... I virtually maxed my car out, I had it up to 140, and there was no speed limiter. None of the cars equipped with 245/50/ZR16s had the limiter, to my knowledge.

Hey Josh...I think you didnt go fast enough for it to kick in. My 91 RS with the 16" tires would go to about 118 and it would just die. The speedometer is probably a little of at that speed.

I took mine to 115 before the limiter kicked in. After my high tech speed limiter eliminator mod (broken speedo cable) I've gotten it to 135 and was still accelerating when I had to let off. I'd guess I would have topped out at 145 or so...

The speed limiter should kick on at 115 not 110, and you dont need a custom chip to take care of that. There is a way to bypass it. I think its listed in the tech articles.

YOu have a TPI, I am getting the impression it was the TBI units that have the speed limiters. I could be wrong, but I know it kicked me off the gas at 190 km/h.

TPI cars could have them too. My old 89 IROC convertible had the 235/55-16 tires & 110mph speedo...it wouldn't get over 110 w/o the limiter kicking in.

Josh,

ALL TPI and TBI cars have speed controlled fuel cutoff programmed in the ECM PROM. Both TPI and TBI Federal cars (cars that were originally delivered outside California) with 15" tires and wheels had the fuel cutoff programmed at 118 MPH on the VSS input. TPI cars that were delivered with 16" 'Z' rated tires have the fuel cutoff programmed at 254 MPH, not infinite speed.

The ECM MUST have a value programmed in this parameter to operate, so the TPI 'Z' rated cars got the highest value allowed in the ECM programming. (There are 255 possible settings - 0 through 254, so the 254 setting is the highest allowed.) In practical use, the limit would never be reached so it is considered to be "unlimited". The only cars that ever had a problem with this were powered by John Lingenfelter. He must have found a back door around the problem to get 304 MPH on his stock-bodied '91 Formulas.
