Water Pump Bearing + Check Engine at Idle

Well guys, my water pump bearing is squeeling, based on what my dad said. After driving around in my beaut, we parked her back in the shed, where she normally resides. After I put my brake up, put it in first, and turned my lights off, my dad said "pop the hood." I was like, ught oh. Well, he opened it and was looking around, and started playing with my fan. I asked, is something wrong with my fan. He continued to play and started to look towards the water pump. He then said, no but your water pump bearing is fixing to wear out. He said it would be fine, just that the bearing is going to squeel louder, and that the water pump is going to have to be replaced. How serious does this appear to you guys? Should I avoid driving it as much as possible?

Also, I just wanted to know, is it normal for the Check Engine light to come on at idle? If it idles for a SMALL length of time, it comes on. Is this normal, or do we gotta problem in her?

Thanks for your help, everyone.

As far as your water pump goes, I would replace it ASAP. It may just squeal like mad for awhile, but eventually it will start leaking. I don't think you want to be stuck in traffic on a hot day, or out in the boonies cruising when it decides to go. I don't think they're that expensive, and they're not too terribly hard to swap out.
Now for your check engine light. How does the car idle? Is it where it should be? Are you current on all your tune up type maintenance? Also, have you replaced your O2 Sensor? If my idle drops too low on occasion, for example if I am stopped and I stab the throttle very briefly and let off it will drop for just a second and the engine light will come on just until the idle comes back up. I would check my timing and make sure that my idle is set properly for starters, then go from there. Just shoot a little more info and I can probably help you more.

Hope this helps,
Jason

I have a rebuilt starter for one thing, and it just started today.
The car idles great, 750 or 800 rpm I believe, only drops when it's freshly started, and after I rev it cold, it will cut off, but when its warm, its great. Maintenence is coming around. 35k miles, sitting 10 years. We have so far:

Rebuilt Starter
Inspection Update
Oil Change
Speedo Gears replaced, speedo didn't work, gears locked up.
New Alternator Belt
New battery

I plan on:

New plugs
Maybe new wires
U-Joints in driveshaft
Emergency brake needs to be fixed, very important.

As for timing, I need to check it. I have spark knocks in the upper rpm sometimes, so it will be checked

I appreciate your help.

You're welcome. I would just do the tune up to it, and see what happens. If it continues maybe see if there are any codes in the computer. Glad I could help.

I greatly appreciate it...hmm codes, lets check. I wondered why I had to give it more gas today to practice my uphill takeoffs (im 15) learning with straight gear, and wondering why I was spinning so much. Then I realized I wore all the gravel out and was spinning on dust hehe.

thats an awsome car for your first one, I hope you have good luck with it, and take care of it! it will be a collectors item soon and you can someday say yep I learned to drive on it. I had an 83 Z28 as my second car(and first f-body) and I still hold a candle for those

Thanks for comments, if you seen my pics of it. I like it, and I'm taking TOO much care of her (based on my dad) lol. I like her, and I ain't doing SERIOUS mods to her at all. Maybe full exhaust, intake, etc. etc. But no rebuild or anything unless the motor just...gives. IDK but this car I love. It's not the strongest ever, but it's fun as hell to drive. Anyway, back to my problems. I hope this water pump will last a little while, it's only driven a few times a week, just broke the 100 mile mark today after 2 months after I got the speedo fixed to give you an example of how much it's drove.

After close listening to my idle problems, I have discovered it is NOT sounding good at idle. I might see what I can do as for a low quality sound to let you listen, but it isn't good. It also kind of smells gassy; the exhaust, I've never smelled lean/rich before but I think it's running somewhat rich because, it DRINKS gas, and it smells like fine smoke kind of, with gas in it. Any more suggestions?
