The rebuilt kits are way cheaper than a new starter, but I'm not sure what is involved in rebuilding one. Which is the better route to take?

Don't even think about a cheap starter. Delco is the ONLY way to go. Parts America and other similar junk comes with a lifetime warranty and it's damn good thing because you'll spend a lifetime changing them. I've seen a local mechanic replace a Parts America lifetime starter 3 times in 3 months on the same car. He'll only install Delco starters now.
Whatever you do, don't buy the starter from the same place that you got that solenoid you gave me!

My dad always rebuilds his starters if they aren't too far gone. He had taken the one off of his truck, replaced the brushes and some other stuff and put it back on before I got up one morning. I'd try to rebiuld it first that way if you do it right then you now know how to fix your starter, if you mess up stick it back together and take it to the parts place and get another one.
Get a repair manual before you start if you need some guidence.
