Timing advance questions

I kno wthis is going to sound stupid..but so be it

Where/ how do I advance the timing; by physically turning the distributor or by changing settings in the prom?

What are some good initial settings given the mods in my signature line.

Thanks!

Marty

Leave the timing at the factory 6* BTDC, unless you are going to burn a chip with a different base timing.
To set the timing you disconnect the EST wire, located along the firewall, above the heater box (towards the middle of the car), it is a brown wire with a single connector. After disconnecting that you start the car, set the parking brake, block the wheels, when it enters closed loop, put it in drive, check the timing. If it needs adjusting you loosen the distributor clamp bolt and while pointing the timing light at the tab/ balancer, turn the dist until the timing is at 6* BTDC. Tighten the dist clamp bolt, recheck the timing and if it is still at 6*, turn the car off, reconnect the EST wire, disconnect the neg terminal from the battery (clears the est code that was set when the wire was disconnected), reconnect the battery and start the car, make sure no check engine light comes on when running/driving.

Thanks for your reply.

I can reprogram the chip if necessary to increase performance. Is there a definate SOP difference in advancing the timing a little.

If I can make a few subtle changes to the prom then that would be great.

Thanks

That is dependant on the engine, some will react well to 2-3* more advance and others (mine) react poorly. You may feel a difference in launch but as the RPM's rise and more timing is added via the programming you may run into detonation, which will pull timing and cause a power loss.

just as a thought advancing the timing a bit is one of the features of the hyperjunk chips.

How do you check timing electronically?
My tab is off but I don't remember which way and I have suspicions about my balancer.
I thought my scanning software would show me the desired 6 deg with the EST disconnected but it was showing me 20.

You don't, though I suppose you could disconnect the EST wire and see what the scanner says your timing is at when at idle.

I tried that and the scanner said 20 while my timing light said 6.
