Steering problem?

Ok, I'm confused now.

The other day I replaced my steering pump lines. I replaced the input and the rubber portion of the return line. I did what Chiltons and Haynes said to do for the "bleeding" of the system, by raising the front end and turning the wheels for the full range at about 1500 RPM. The books also said to drive slowly from lock to lock for a little while, so I did that at the mall parking lot when nobody was there. After that, everything was peachy. Prior to that, the steering was really choppy, but I kind of expected that. I just got back from a day trip to Denver(about 100 miles) and when I pulled into my parking spot here in Colorado Springs, the steering was choppy again. I'm just really confused now. The pump resevior is still full of fluid.

Thnaks for the help,
Jesse

Well, it turned out the belt actually flipped upside down and was extremely loose. I fixed that and it works just fine now.

Thanks RB83L69 (PM) for the suggestion,
Jesse

Now I just have to find out what is leaking. It just started, as far as I know. It is between the pully and the back. I have no idea if there is a seal or anything I can replace. Argh, I fixed two problems just to find another. Oh well, I guess that's just what happens when you play with your toys.

If you pried against the pump reservoir to tighten the belt, you just wasted the reservoir, and the 4" diameter O-ring that seals the pump into the reservoir is now leaking, and it's new pump time.

That sux.

There's a little tang on the bracket that you can pry against, using a large tool such as a tire iron, and with the water pump as the tool's fulcrum.

Yup, I pried against the resevior. Why couldn't I just replace the seal? Did doing that bend anything?

New reman pump w/resevior- $60
New reman pump w/o resevior - $40
Seal kit - $10

Thanks,
Jesse

Prying against the reservoir bends it. It's nothing but sheet metal, and once it's bent, the O-ring won't seal to the pump body which is a small round cast-iron thing.

Oh well, live and learn.

Ok, thanks.

Looks like I'll be spending some money next paycheck.
