What kind of stock dyno numbers should I expect.

I just picked up a 84' Z28, 305, HO carb model from the tow yard for $800.
It is a serious beater, and I am building it to be a road race car.
the stock class I am building for is the NASA Camaro Mustang Challange.
The cars are limited to 230 hp, and 300 ft/lbs.
before I start building and deciding how I should go about it,
What should I expect satock chassis dyno numbers to be?

As it came from the junkyard, I'd wager a case of beer that it won't go over 140HP.

I don't see why you couldn't build it up to the max 230 HP with some carefully selected stock GM parts laying around that same yard! Find an older, non-smog SBC for cylinder heads. Chevy has plenty of decent non-smog cams to pick from. You'll get a lot of gains from fine-tuning a Q-Jet. Damon is the Q-Jet God of this website and he has plenty of posts full of good stuff! Also, a properly set up HEI distributor is a must. Get a good selection of springs, weights, and vacuum advances while you're scrounging around in the yard. If you're lucky, you might find some stainless tubular exhaust manifolds. Sure they're not headers, but I'll bet they're cheaper and easier to install!

Thanks for your input. It wasnt the junk yard, it was a tow yard, someone didn't want to pay the impound lein on it, but it was still in pretty rough shape.
The clutch and tranny felt pretty solid, but it still drove like a truck compared to my modded out 99'.
It had a motor fire the first day I had it, while on the smog machine.
It didn't pass.
The slave hose popped and spwed fluid onto the manifold and flamed up pretty good.
Anyway. I saw some hump heads on ebay ther other day, but I beleive this class restricts me to OEM parts 82 - 92.
are there any significant gains to be found from porting the stock heads?
would heads from the 350 fit or be any better then stock?

I will ask soon how to build this motor up to
make it competitive

Evan, I have the same car but with 56,000
original miles. With no changes to the motor,
except 1.6 rockers, calculated rear wheel hp
is about 215-220! This is based on some std dragstrip formulas given weight (3300lbs) and top speed 96.74. With a well
tuned L69, 230 rwhp is not many mods away.
