400 aluminum heads on 383?

Just a quick question...can you use heads that were on a 400 SBC on a 350 or 383 small block with the proper head gasket? I'm just worried about the steam holes in the 400 heads. Yes, the heads are worth it, ported AFR's

As long as your are using a 350 head gasket, Your golden. If you are super worried, Aluminum is easy to fix. You could have the holes welded shut and just mill it back to spec.

Wait, no you cant, sell your heads to me....cheap

The steam holes don't hurt a thing. The head gasket covers them up. Consider them as being already prepped for future upgrades.

Uhhhh,,,, it depends IF they unshroud the valves on the heads,, and to what bore they took it out to. IF,, they took the chambers out to 4.155” to mimic a .030 over 400’s bore,,, I’d use the typical "400 gasket" (4.190” – 4.200”). If there’s a little core shift, a typical "350 gasket" (4.166”) might not seal the chambers. Chances are they’re standard 4” chambered heads with just the steam holes drilled and in that case the “350 gasket” would work – I’d definitely check them though!

No need to worry about the steam holes. They’re nonexistent on a 350 block and it doesn’t matter if the gasket you use has steam holes or not.
