Hood Shocks

Hey everyone,

Does anyone know if you need different hood shocks when you change from the steel hood to a fiberglass hood. I recently purchased an ASCD 2" cowl hood and was informed that the pressure in the steel hood shocks would push right through the fiberglass hood. If this is the case does anyone know where i can get a set of hood shocks for a fiberglass hood? Thanks for any help you guys might give.

Thanks

as far as i know no one makes a low preasure shock. most people ask around on here or else where and find a set thats too weak to hold up a steel hood and use them.

I to have a fiberglass cowl hood. (daytona style ) Anyways, it was on there when I got the car. There are 3 things you can do. 1st take the old shocks off and when you have to do work, chop up a broom handle to hold it in place...not very safe. Second, the ugly method (which is what the owner of the car before me did. Cut the back corners of the hood. The double hinge system will go verticle, and the slightly abck, holding the hood up. The third is to switch over to pins. This will help in high speed applications anyways since thanks to the bernoilli (spelled wrong) effect, your hood will tend to want to rise up at high speed due to the difference in pressure under the hood, and over the hood. (the cowl induction helps somewhat, but the pins are still a good idea). Personally, I plan on pinning mine, then going back with some fiberglass cloth and resin and fixing that stupid corner cutting method. (Get it, he cut corners to get the job done? )
Alright, now that I am probablt baned from speaking for that bad pun. Good luck, if you happen to find good hood shocks post it up for everyone to see

I would just go with half burnt out ones from another 3rd gen. I'll bet you can find plenty of people with hood shocks they would be willing to trade for a set that would hold up their hood.

I've got a pair that need replacing cause my hood won't stay up. When I get my new ones you can have the old ones to try!

TopCat,

There are at least two different pressure ratings for nitrogen gas springs for ThirdGen hoods. The TransAm hoods are a bit heavier than the standard SC or Formula hoods. There might be a similar pressure difference for Camaros, but I'm not certain. In either case, the gas springs actually exert force on the hood hinge rails instead of the hood directly. If the aftermarket hood is well designed, it should be reinforced in these areas to tolerate the spring pressure.

If you can't find acceptable gas springs at your auto parts dealer, you might want to check AVM Inc. They manufacture gas springs for about eleventy-jillion applications, some of which include automotive applications. Specify the correct end connectors, length, stroke, and pressure, and you can get just about anything. I did this for the clamshell hood on my '50 pickup, and the springs ended up costing me about $30.00 each.

I just went through this myself. I checked every auto parst store in town looking through all their application guides. They all listed the same part number for all thirdgens, the one strong enough for a steel hood. Luckily for me, the hood struts I had were gettign weak, they would barely hold the steel hood open. Those turned out to be perfect for the new glass hood. The best way to find a good set would be to go to a junkyard and grab a set of struts that won't quit hold up a steel hood.
