Overfilled crank case??
Yesterday I changed the oil in my '89 to get it ready for winter storage and today when I checked the oil level on the dipstick it showed a high reading. The level was just over the arrow pointing down on the dipstick. Is it okay for this to happen??
Thanks
Thanks

Cool thanks, yeah I dont' normally check the level that soon. And I let it all drain out until it drips, and put exactly 5 quarts in so I'm sure it's not a big deal.

dude on these cars you should check the oil like once a week when you fill up for gas!!! back a few years ago my cousin blew his engine in the trans am because he only checked like once a month and when he did he forgot to wipe the dipstick off then check the oil!!! so he thouight he was good. then one day pllwlwlwleelelflfcbvjffjkjkdjksd with a few @#$$%# @#$#$% @## and lots of money!
Ok, let's set this straight. I usually check the dip stick when the engine is completely cold (before going for a boot). Is this oK?
I also know that it has been said that you should check the level when it is warm...

Checking the level before you start it will give the best reading in my opinion. Checking when it's warm is fine as long as you give it time to drain, but I like to check it when it's been sitting for a while.

yes it is best when it is sitting for a while!!! but sometimes it is not convieniant so you pump your gas you go pay piddle around in the station for a few then go out and check your oil... this gives it time to go back into the oilpan

Actually, it only takes about 20 seconds for all the oil to drain back down into the pan. Anything that doesn't come to the pan in that time, isn't coming.
If it took a few minutes for it to drain back, your engine would suck the pan dry in about a minute or two... then you're really screwed, lol.
