Will pre 87 valve covers work??

I have a minor oil leak after modding my centerbolt vc's for the S/R torquer heads(machined for both centerbolt and perimeter). My question is, can I get the valve covers that came (I think) before '87? would it have the same smog provisions (Pcv valve, etc) as the ones i got now?

Mike,

'86 and older SBC covers are perimeter bolted, and should have an oil filler in one cover and a PCV grommet in the other (mine are that way).

Okay, i have three holes in all. one is a oil filler and pcv valve (hose goes to manifold) on the driver side. and the other there is a grommet and a hose that goes to the throttle body. I think i need perimeter bolt vc's because my cb vc's leak oil.

Mike..I have a set of those covers. They look like the TPI centerbolts. But have the perimeter bolt pattern. I dont need them now, I bought new set of heads with the centerbolt pattern. If you want them I will sale them for 25.00 shipped. They have the three fittings as you discribed. I found getting everything hooked back up with aftermarket covers to be a pain. Thats why I bought these.

No problem glad to help..Yeah..they are original GM valve covers they were installed on the 85-86 TPI cars. Maybe the L69 cars IM not sure. They have the ribs like the 87-92 centerbolt covers. If you have a classic industries catalog there is a picture of the ones I have. They are on page 474 at the top.

They are in good shape, they could use some cleanup and paint to make them really nice. I still have the oil fill cap, and grommets.

Mike I think you should try and find some of the early '87 valve covers. Yours currently have three holes correct? The '85 and '86 I beleive only have two (PCV and oil, but I could be wrong - it's been known to happen) but some of the '87 ones had all three and were perimiter.

RD,

The first post mentioned that he has installed World Products S/R Torquers (with both perimeter and center bolt cover holes provided). I almost missed that, too, and wondered what the heck he was going to do for bolts on a post-'87 engine.

BTW - I'm glad you caught the third hole. It's the vent tube for the PCV system and draws fresh air from the TB. I forgot to mention that one. (Oops!)
