Oil pump - high volume or no?

I'm rebuilding a 350 for the 92 car and am curious if I should get the high volume oil pump that comes with the federal mogul rebuild kit or specify that I want just the standard oil pump. The engine will be a mild one with tight clearances (lpe 211/219 cam, pro topline 180's and tpi)

No, get the standard pump. H/V pump will empty your oil pan during hard acceleration.

get the standard pump

theres no need to try to pump extra oil in there.. athough if you did, you would have to have better then normal drainback.

it would also put uneeded stress on your distrib(and in turn the cam and timing chain)

you dont need it for this motor, it wont help anything, and you would be putting uneeded stress on the distrib.. just get the standard pump with the standard pressure spring...

use a stock big block chevy pump. we use them on a lot of our asfault cars with stock pans very good .if you look at the housing on your small block pump it has 4 bolts on the plate where your gears are , the bbc pump has 5 bolts there are more teeth in the bbc pump to. volume is fine in a stock pump but you need a little more pressure bbc has that.......as long as you maintain at least 10psi per thousand rpm you will be ok .....Ex if you turn 5000rpm you need 50 psi

I did exactly as Ede mentioned (M55 pump ands a #26 spring).
At idle with a hot eng, I have 25 psi.
Cruising thru town, I have abt 45 psi.
At highway speed I have 60 psi.
BTW, that Mr Gasket spring is rated at 60 PSI.

FWIW, Lingenfelter recommends this set-up for all SBC street engs.

Since the Mr. Gasget spring is rated to 60 PSI, have you ever noticed your pressure go above 60 when racing or really tearin around town? Also, what do you mean by welding a brace from the pickup and bolting it to the pump body? What exactly does that do, and how do you know where to get it welded to? I'm going to be rebuilding my SBC which should be pushing about 420-430 HP, so do you think the M55 with the High Pressure spring would still be a good route to take?? Atleast it isn't an expensive setup.

With a cold eng, the oil press is over 60 PSI., but I also have my oil filter bypass valve plugged off, so that may make it a little higher than normal.
Once the oil temp comes up, the spring regulates the oil press to ~60 psi up to at least 5K rpm (haven't been past 5K yet).

The oil pick-up tube (strainer) is a pressed fit into the pump, and they occasionally fall out. The brace mentioned before, keeps the pick-up tube from falling out (or twisting) of the oil pump and starving the eng for oil. I brazed my pick-up tube straight to the pump.

To find exactly where to weld the pick-up tube:
Install the pick-up tube. With eng upside-down, place some modeling clay on the pick-up tube, and install the oil pan. Remove the oil pan. The clay will have been squeezed between the oil pan and the pick-up tube. Keep adjusting the tube till you have 3/8" clearance, then weld/braze it.

IMHO, this set-up will be fine for your engine.

i don't like welding to the pump cover, but i know many many people do with no problems. i prefer to bolt to the pump and weld to the pick up tube
