timing on a 305?

yes, somebody said that it is 6 degrees spark advance.
i'm at 10 and sometimes feels like i'm detonating, and worst i'm doing this for years and years! can somebody please bring some light to my ignorance?
the engine is a 1979, tiny puny stock 4 barrel 305, ex olds 79. (cutlass i think)
thanks everybody.

am running an essentially stock 305 w/ 1.6 rockers and carb now. Current timing is set at 5 1/4* advanced. 10 does sound like an awful lot.

Yeah 10 is way too much. 6 is alright. I accidentally set the timing at 12 after my last tune up. I guess I had no detonation because the plugs were new but I backed it off to 6* the day I found out. Throttle response obviously went down but at least the motor will live longer.

I beg to differ. I failed emissions bad, and my timing was at 5*, I reset it to 10*, and the motor came back to life, and flew through the sniffer test.

Was on a dyno yesterday, started at 4* advance on timing. Shifting at 5500 rpm 1st thru 4th I got 177hp, when I reset the timing to 5 1/4* I got 185hp. I wouldn't have thought that little of a timing change would make a difference, it did.

FSG,

Every engine is different. My 45,000 mile 305 TPI runs well at 10½° BTC, as indicated by the balancer ring. Since the balancers can't always be trusted, you really have to play with the settings and use the marks as a reference point. I start to get excessive retard when I get closer to 12° on 94 octane elthanol blend.

I get a max of 9* of spark retard during WOT runs with my timing set at 6* BTDC, which isn't good, but then haveing the wrong knock sensor isn't helping me. Either that, or the outerring on the balancer isn't right.

I was playing around with mine last night, it was originally at 6. I bumped it up to 10 and it really made a difference. I had a surging problem at WOT and that is now gone bye bye. I can hear just a hint of detonation when running about 2/3 throttle, but normal driving is fine. I think I'm gonna leave it!

thanks to everyone for your info.
i did set it back to 6* and runs real smooth, but doesn't have the previous quick response, don't get me wrong, is still good and it was detonating at 10*, maybe i should try those aftermarket springs for the distributor flywheels, i think they'll compensate by allowing the timing to reach the top sooner, do you think so?
thanks again.
