mechanical pump or not

hey guy, hopeing u could help me out here. i got a modded 350 in my 83 z28 and i find that around the mechanical fuel pump ring there is some gas some how leaking out pluse the gasket is leaking. my questions is what r the symptoms of a mechanical fuel pump going??? i got a holley 750vs carb on a holley contender intake should i up grade my pump since my car is modded? does it make a diffrence??

There are basically two symptoms of a mechanical pump that's about to go out: 1) It doesn't maintain pressure; 2) It leaks.

Leakage can be either internal (leaks into the crankcase, contaminating the oil), or external (leaks to the outside). Neither is good.

thanks for the reply. so i guess i do need to replace it, i have one from a lg4 could i use that on my 350?? or what after market one would work best, i have a late 70s 350 carbed. thanks

The advantage the LG4 part would have is it has a return port. Helps keep the fuel cool that's going to the carb. If it is in good condition, it should feed the engine just fine.

Carter & Holley both make decent aftermarket performance pumps. But, I'm doing fine with an AC replacement on the Camaro.
