crank but no spark

I have an 89GTA 5.7 ,here is the problem I was driving to work when all of a sudden the car died on me, tried to start it back up again and it won't. My car crank but won't spark. My freind told me i need to change my pick up coil module or my coil. Any Ideas what's wrong and how to fixe my car?I would really appriciate any of yor opinion.

Floppy,

Find out what kind of friend he/she is. Remove the HEI module and have your friend give you a ride to the auto parts store to have it tested (usually free).

While you're working near the distributor, measure the resistance of the pickup coil. It should be 500-1,500 ohms, and you should get no reading to ground (infinite). Check the resistance of the coil primary and secondary windings (should be 0.5-1.5 ohms and 6,000-15,000 ohms, respectively). Then check the resistance of the coil and spark plug wires. About 500-7,500 ohms per foot should be about right.

One of these should get you pointed in the right direction.

hey floppy I have been having the same problem for awhile now.
if you want you can read the other topic in here that i started but that only got me to reading what vader just said about testing resistance.
definately go check that module though because if you dont have a short then its a cheap part and you are done.
