How fast is my new baby and what mods should I do?

I finally found an IROC and it's an 87 LB9 auto and looks completley stock.

How fast is it in stock form (it's pretty quick actually, I can smoke the tires upto 40 and had it upto 120mph) and what mods can I do to get more power and how much hp will they add? What about torque, how can I get more of that too and still keep the origional block?

Thanks,

RMK

The first place to start is with a good performance tune up (Accel or MSD ingntion parts, AC/Delco Rapid Fire plugs, K&N Filters change all fluids, flush radiator, you know, the works). At the same time, do all the free mods you have tools to do. Cut out all the baffels under the air filter housing, take the screens off of your MAF sensor, port your plenum, and do a throttle body coolany by-pass. There are several articles in the tech section of this site that show you how to do all those things.
Then, the first place to start spending real amounts of money is on your exhaust. With all the more air you are getting put into you engine, you will want to free up the exhaust to take some of it out. Depending on how much money you have, get a set of headers, gut your catalytic converter and get a mandrel bent, 3" cat-back system. Most people use the Edelbrock TES Headers sold from Summit or Jegs for around $320. When you have your exhaust manifolds off, take off your cat, and gut it. Then add a good cat-back system from Hooker, Edelbrock, Flowmaster, ect. expect to spend about $300 or so there too. All of these things together, should take close to a full second off of your 1/4 mile times!

Current Mods: Edelbrock TES 1 5/8" Headers, Hooker 3" Aerochamber Cat-Back System, Performance Resource Chip with 160* Thermostat, Accel Ignition Components, K&N Filters, All Free Mods, Falken ZIEX Z-Rated Tires.

Soon to come: LT4 HOT Cam, Air Flow Research 190cc Heads, 2800 RPM Stall Converter and SLP 3.70 Rear End Gears.

if it smokes the tires up to 40, either get those 13" 155s off it, or if you have real tires, DONT touch anything !

Don't remove the MAF screen! There..now you can't say I didn't warn you. Your car should run mid 15's stock if you shift the auto your self. Are you smoking the tires through 40 with the breaks on? I really really doubt they smoke if you just step on the gas..I get smoke the tires up to 60 but Im only moving about 11 MPH. Good luck with your car!

DON'T REMOVE THE MAF SCREEN!

A full tune up will make a major difference. That's true on almost any used car.

After that exhaust, a shift kit, and some N2O.

If I mash the gas at a stand still without my foot on the break they just smoke up then it hits 40 and gets grip then its off. It's scary. The tires are stock 245s and I think I'll try for 255 if they will fit at the back.

As for the screen I'll probably just leave them in that way theres no danger of the sensor breaking.

I'll go for the K&N filter swap and the Ram Air conversion from the tech articles. Has anyone done that yet? How easy was the Ram Air and did you put a small hole in the tube to let any water exit that may get sucked in?

I'm also looking to get the kit from GM p#8673948 that will allow me to upshift into 4th at WOT.

Thanks again
