Question ive been meaning to ask...
I have been meaning to ask this question for a long time, but i always forget. Ever since i put my Pro-flo air cleaner on, every time the secondaries open up it makes this loud sound from the carb that kinda sounds liek a rice burners exhaust. its hard to describe, but it souds like my carb had one too many bean burritos. Is this just the air being sucked in so fast or something? It never made this sound with the stock air cleaner.

The intake has pulses of air, just like the exhaust does. Each cylinder creates a pulse as it sucks in its air. So the air flow through there isn't a smooth laminar flow like water in a garden hose. The stock air cleaner serves as the muffler for this sound.
If that's the triangular air filter with the foam top, your car will probably have at least 15% more HP without it. It's a major restriction and gets dirty REAL FAST: look at how little filter surface area it has. It's a street-rodder look-cool part, not a go-fast one. Get a L69 dual-snorkel air cleaner instead. That's the best setup I know of for one of these cars. Above all don't get one of those "drop-base" units; they all locate the lid so close to the carb air horn that they're more restrictive than the L69 setup.

Really? I figured it was better because it is more free flowing than the stock one. What do you mean by drop-base??

Try putting your stock one back on and see which one actually flows better. You might be surprised.

Thats the sound of a good old 4-barrel my friend! The best sound a car can make in my opinion.

Ward, you can read this too, if you're bored.
I had a more-detailed page somewhere, but of course, lost the link.

When I changed from the stock cleaner housing to the open air 14" element, I heard that sound and fell in love. I think that every 4bbl carb'd engine should sound like that!!! Even fords!!! I have the stock exhaust, and even though it rumbles, the rrrrrrrrrooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrr of the engine is sooooo loud!!!!
YEAH BABY!!!!

Actually, 84 it has a metal framework that keeps the foam from coming loose. I am not wild about it, but it was $5 from the junk yard and it takes up alot less space than the bigass stock one. I can actually see my throttle cable now! lol...
